It makes me writhe with anger when i see his commercial. A friend of mine worked dedicately for the company when Dyson built a factory in the UK till he followed all other profit greedy companies and outsourced to China…. DONT BUY!

There is nothing good I can say about the Dyson Ball Vacuum. It is about as noisy as a jet on the runway; it’s difficult to muscle around; to empty the canister you have to pull stuff out with your fingers; and $400 is outrageousfor such a trashy heap of plastic. I could go on – I’d give it minus stars but there isn’t that option. Can I return it to the manufacturer?

I read the Consumer Reports review before I bought this machine and thought it sounded like what I need: compact machine with good suction on wood floors and area rugs. I bought the DC 24 on June 4, 2009 and within a week it was having suction problems on large area rugs with low pile. It worked very well on my hardwood floors but on large area rugs – for some reason the ball stopped rolling and the darn thing suctioned to the rug and I could not move the machine forward or back. I had to turn it off and on to get it to release the rug. I phoned Dyson’s Helpline and was advised to return it for an exchange – they seemed to think that the machine I bought had a defect in the roller ball. For $399 the DC 24 is kaput after 1 week? I am very disappointed in this machine – mainly because it is GREAT on my hardwood floors but very unreliable on our large area rugs. For all the hype about Dyson vacuums, with this experience, I do not think I will exchange it but will return it for another brand. Hoping to find a good compact machine NOT made in China that will do the job on both hardwood floors and area rugs – should that be so difficult to find? Evidently, yes.

This vacuum is wonderful! I love it. It does not require a lot of work and is very maneuverable. I highly recommend it!

First of all, this is a much more reliable and well made vacuum, in comparison to the cheapo Dirt Devils, Eurekas, Bissells, and Hoovers of the world. What makes you shake your head, is that a few simple refinements could have made this machine a real winner.
Apparently, the vacuum manufacturing companies conspire to make their products fall short of customers complete satisfaction in one aspect or another, insuring that each customer will search their whole lives for the PERFECT vacuum… and therefore purchase at least one or more from EACH company during their existence on this earth, guaranteeing that every company will remain in business forever. One brand has bad motors, another has noise-busting loudness, another has cheap parts, another has useless attachments, etc. etc.
The weaknesses of this machine are:
1) Power cord is far too short. 20 foot cord should be extended to at least 25 feet.
2) The red on/off switch is surprisingly poorly designed. Because it is recessed in a vertical cavity on the front of the machine, you must “think ahead” before pressing it for both on or off. Anything other that a completely vertical point of your index finger towards the floor, results in a sticking feel, that results in a NO RESULT.. and a more carefully thought out “RE-PRESS” will be required to turn the machine on or off. If you are right-handed, you must reach around to the front left of the stick, and try your luck. Lefties may fare better. When the phone rings, you can’t just flip it right off.
3)The red foot pedal (to disengage the handle from the vertical position) is also very balky, and often requires a second or third press of your toe to begin the vacuuming “festival of fun”.
The actual vacuuming is good for the MAIN COURSE. But this Dyson will especially appeal to those who enjoy an appetizer of un-plugging & re-plugging, with repetetive finger and toe pressing for dessert. Perhaps the Olympics should add “marathon vacuuming” to their menu of events!!
Pardon me while I go out to try to diagnose the “electric starter” of my snowblower, which has malfunctioned, after spending $200 to repair the choke/carbuerator assembly. Of couse, the warranty has expired, as usual. Snow tomorrow night!!
